Limitations of Network Traffic

Since CSN only has limited bandwidth available, the following limitations on network traffic (up- and download) exist:

  • 10,000 MB from 8 am to 12 am (08:00–24:00)
  • No limit from 12 am to 8 am (00:00–08:00)

Network services within the university network are generally unrestricted, however, certain inbound connections are not allowed.

In Appendix II you can find the restrictions related to the terms of use. Please refer to the following information for further details.

Fixed Limits for Total Traffic

For measuring the total traffic the amount of all data sent and received by a computer is recorded. The amount of traffic generated during the course of a day is limited in order to prevent negative impacts on interactive network use. Network use is unlimited at nighttime.

The current limits are defined in Appendix II of the terms of use. These restrictions are binding. The first violation will result in a warning which will be followed by a temporary suspension of the network connection in case of a a second violation. If you transmit more than 10,000 MB per day between 08:00 and 24:00, you will be warned first and, in case of repetition, lose your network connection:

  • The first violation will result in a 4-month warning.
  • In case of a second violation while being warned your network connection will be suspended for two weeks. The warning period will be extended to an additional four months after the end of the suspension.
  • Further violations after the suspension while being warned will each be punished by a new suspension for four weeks. The warning period will be extended to an additional four months after the end of the suspension.
  • Prior violations will not affect the process after they expire.

In case you need an increased amount of traffic for work compliant with our terms of use, you may apply for an exception. Regular limits apply as long as the exception has not been confirmed by e-mail.

General Restrictions of Network Services

In addition to the restrictions listed in Appendix II the following restrictions currently apply

  • To limit the spread of viruses the following ports are blocked: 135, 445, 1025, 2745, 3127, 3140, 6129, 17300
  • Non-allowed programs: Hamachi
